The study further suggests those who want to lose weight in their 50s and 60s, to consider heading to the cardio workout room instead of counting calories. Both, those who dieted and those who exercised lost a significant amount of weight, according to findings from the study on ‘whether a calorie-restriction diet can extend lifespan’. However, while exercisers maintained their strength and muscle mass and increased aerobic capacity, those who dieted lost muscle mass, strength and aerobic capacity. "Exercise-induced weight loss provides the additional benefit of improving physical performance capacity," says Edward Weiss, Ph.D., lead author and assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University's Doisy College of Health Sciences. "If push comes to shove and somebody wants to know if they should diet or exercise to lose weight, I would suggest exercise, provided they are willing to put in the extra time and effort and not offset the gains they make by eating more." Weiss is a part of a Washington University team of scientists who studied healthy 50- to 60-year olds whose body mass index was between 23 and 30, placing them at the high end of normal weight or overweight. Of the 34 study participants, 18 dieted and 16 exercised to lose weight.

weight loss diet

weight loss diet

A Healthy Weight Loss Diet Plan
By: Robin Miller
All overweight people yearn for some kind of dieting miracle ... something like Cinderella's fairy godmother who will wave her magic wand and produce an instantly slim body. Alas, this isn't going to happen. Instead, seek a healthy weight loss diet plan instead. The multi billion dollar weight loss industry is loaded with all kinds of illusions. Here is the truth about some of the most popular ones.

1. It's not about "will power" and rigid control. Often in my dieting days, it seemed as though there was a "Good Me" and a "Bad Me" and they were continually at war. The Good Me had to somehow force the Bad Me into behaving in a proper way. When I didn't 'follow the rules', I felt it was only suitable to punish myself.
The result of such an insane plan? The same old cycle again and again ... deciding to exercise and eat in a sensible way and then failing to do so. The only result is mental turmoil and keeping the pounds piled on.
Choose a weight loss plan that is pleasing, that you want to do. Then it will be easy to follow and the weight loss will be permanent.

2. There is no quick and easy way.
We all like to hear the "Lose 10 pounds in a weekend" stories. But they're only cruel delusions. Even if, by some miracle, you did lose 10 pounds in a weekend, it would come right back. These are nothing but scams - and often dangerous scams, at that. If you are 50 pounds overweight, you know that those pounds didn't appear overnight and it will take time for them to disappear. Be patient and face the reality: genuine weight loss is about lifestyle changes, not quick fixes.

3. Set mini-goals.
If your ultimate goal is to lose 50 pounds, that can seem so far away to be hopeless. So set mini-goals -- and rewards -- along the way. That way you will get constant reinforcement as you move forward and you will be encouraged, rather than discouraged. Your motivation will remain high because you have lost 10 pounds and you have a new outfit, rather than focusing on the 40 still to lose.

4. The weight loss program isn't important, as long as it's healthy. If a weight loss diet plan really and truly was successful for everyone, there would be no need for new ones. But watch the magazines at the checkout stands of your favorite supermarket or discount store. There are weekly magazines that have a new diet program in every single issue! And these new weight loss programs are usually accompanied by pictures of fabulous food.

In truth, there are only two criteria for a weight loss plan:
* Will it promote your health or worsen it? You might believe that losing weight is the only thing that matters to you and you don't care how it happens. However, if you are sick and weak and can't enjoy anything in your life, you will quickly change your mind. Such extreme measures as having part of your intestine removed certainly cannot be defended by anyone as a health measure.
* Can you enjoy the diet plan enough to follow it? If you won't stick to a weight loss plan, nothing else matters. For instance, I am a vegetarian because I don't like to eat meat. Therefore, a program such as Atkins would be torture to me and there's no way I would ever follow it.

Those who write diet books seem to think that if they simply explain the diet plan well enough, their readers will lose weight. But folks who have excess poundage to lose know that the problem isn't the diet ... it's getting themselves to follow through on the plan that is the problem.

5. Don't suffer over your weight!
Overweight people might find it hard to imagine the instruction to "have fun" when it comes to weight loss. Yet, that's the genuine path to success. Eliminating all stress and suffering over your weight makes it significantly easier to persist until you are happy with your weight.
Concentrate on making it fun! For instance,
* Invent some wonderful new recipes that you adore using only the foods you have decided to eat
* Continually focus on the benefits you expect to receive from being slim? Will you have more energy? Look better in your clothes? Feel confident? Improve your social life? Whatever you will gain, concentrate on that, rather than any feeling of deprivation.
* Create rewards for yourself. They don't have to be financial and can be very short term. If you skipped a piece of cake, reward yourself with an hour of gardening. If you've lost three pounds, take a nap instead of cleaning the bathroom. In this way, you receive constant positive feedback and it encourages you to continue.
* Remember that YOU chose to undertake this. No one is forcing you to do anything and there is nothing to rebel against.
A healthy weight loss plan, once that includes great food and sensible exercise, plus a serene and cheerful mind, cannot help but result in the lean body you crave and deserve.
About The Author: Obesity and flab are a national - or even worldwide - epidemic and interest in home fitness equipment has never been greater. One is for it to be done inadvertently---like when you just get busy and forget to eat.

Another is when you purpose deprive your body of food to try and "speed up" your results.

Regardless of how it happens, either scenario in this case is equally damaging. Although you will decrease the calories that you take in which may lead to some short-term weight loss, the kicker here is that you will be slowing down your metabolism.

What this means is that after the starving is over, your body will hold onto the next meal you eat for dear life, expecting be be starved again.

If you allow starvation to become a habit, you will actually be contributing to your own weight gain in the future.

One of the main reasons that this is even possible is because of what happens to your body when it goes into starvation mode.

Many people are at least initially excited to see a few pounds drop off because they haven't even.

However, what they do not realize is that when the body is being "starved", it is burning muscle tissue at a very unhealthy rate. Since muscle weighs more than fat, the majority of weight being dropped during starvation may indeed be muscle.

This is very bad news, especially for women, who have a more difficult time building new muscle.

Muscle is actually one of the things that helps keep fat off in the first place because it literally burns fat 24 hours per day.

Now more than likely the weight will be gained backed because:

A) People who tend to starve themselves often lack the discipline to eat right and exercise regularly, and/or

B) With less muscle, the body now has a weakened ability to keep fat off (this is also why many people gain MORE weight than they initially lost)

When the weight comes back, its fat percentage will be significantly higher and the result will be a heavier person with a decreased ability to burn fat effectively.

NOT GOOD.

Therefore, make sure that you are keeping your meals no more than 4 hours apart. As long as you do this, you will be supporting the healthy metabolism that you'll need to lose the kind of weight that you've committed to.

To YourBestBody,

Lawrence Cole

Your Lifestyle and Fitness Coach

About the Author: Lawrence Cole is a Lifestyle and Fitness Consultant based out of Los Angeles, CA and the owner of <a title="<a href=" href="<a">http://www.yourbestbodynow.com" target="_blank">http://www.yourbestbodynow.com . With so many weight loss programs in the net, how to you find one that will help you to lose weight naturally that is suitable to you?

Let’s cut through the clutter and the confusion. No matter which natural weight loss sites you may come across, the more credible ones will all say the same thing albeit in different form and manner. To lose weight naturally and keep the extra weight off permanently, you must consume fewer calories than you expand calories.

“Huh? Isn’t that common sense? Can you tell me something new?” you are probably asking me right now.

Fine, I concede that that statement is common sense, so let me ask you something back. If everyone knows it, then why is it that there are so many overweight people who have tried so many methods to lose weight with numerous weight loss programs failed in getting rid of their flabby tummy and extra body fat?

Even if some of them were successful and managed to shed a few pounds, they cannot seem to keep the weight off for long and soon, the weight that they have lost will all come back to haunt them. Are you one of them? If so, do you want to know why?

The reason why the weight that they loss came back because most people go for quick fixed weight loss solutions. People prefer the no pain and hassle free methods to lose weight such as taking slimming pills, going on fad diets, using muscle stimulators and any contraptions that promise fast weight loss and muscle toning.

The cliché “No pain no gain” is also common sense, don’t you agree? And yet people are still falling into the lure of these temporary weight loss advertisements because they are promised that they can lose weight naturally without having to undergo extensive weight loss programs. People will naturally try to avoid pain and try to take short cuts.

So how to lose weight naturally and keep extra body fat away forever? Eat 5-6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism revving in high gear throughout the day. Drink more plain water instead of soft drinks and sugar laden coffee or tea. Just keep in mind that the amount of calories you eat must be less than what you will use for energy. Simply doing this will help your body burn calories from body fat instead of from the food you consume.

• Lift Weights to Gain Muscles

The more muscles you have, the more your body will naturally burn calories because your muscles need calories to function and stay alive.

You don’t have to gain big muscles like body builders, but just enough to buff and tone you up nicely and at the same time enjoy the calorie burning effect of your muscles. Your muscles will stay with you if you lift weight consistently and this will keep extra body fat at away and is one of the best way to lose extra body weight forever.

• Perform Cardiovascular Exercises to Lose Weight Fast and Naturally

Cardio workouts burn calories quickly. That is if you perform the exercises until you are panting and puffing for 20-30 minutes. If you can read a book or listen to music whilst doing cardio exercises, then your cardio exercises are not intensive enough to burn fat effectively. This is dangerous because along the way there WILL be numerous times where you will be tempted to simply quit altogether. Without knowing where you started, you won't be able to accurately gauge your progress. Not being able too see that progress put you at an extremely high risk of quitting down the road when the going gets tough.

2) Set specific, realistic goals for your weight loss, and WRITE THEM DOWN.

This is one of the most ill-executed steps in the entire process of losing weight. Most people will passively quote some random amount of weight that they "hope" to lose.

- "I need to lose 30 lbs."
- "I'm trying to get back down to a size X"
- "If I can just fit back into Y, I'll be fine"

That is the exact WRONG way to go about your weight loss. All above the above are hopes. Wishes. Desires. And none does a thinner body make.

What you need are detailed, definite goals that are written and time bound (e.g. "over the next 3 months") to hold yourself accountable to doing what you said you were going to do by the time you said you were going to do it.

3) Adopt a step-by-step course of action to get you there

In order for this to work there needs to be a concrete method to your weight loss madness. To this end, you need to chose a weight loss plan that will lead you step-by-step through what to eat (and what not to eat), how and when to exercise, and every other imaginable aspect of losing weight. The reason for this is that goals have a much better chance of becoming reality when they are being attained as a result of a plan or system of action.

4) Get started IMMEDIATELY

Most flunkies know how to study. Most broke people know how wealth is generated. Most overweight people how to lose weight. However, what separates all of these very knowledgeable, yet unsuccessful people from the results they desire is action. Don't let that be your fate.

Once you have written specific goals and chosen a plan of action, don't delay in getting right on track to weight loss. The cheesecake, burgers, chocolate, and pastries aren't going anywhere. You can snack on them moderately once you've achieved your goals. Don't get caught into the trap of holding off having Your Best Body any longer. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be done.

5) Be Prepared for the emotional roller coaster

Nearly everyone who has tried to lose weight has had some level of success at one time or another. For those who have not been able to sustain desirable results, being knocked out by the emotional roller coaster is most likely to blame.

Look, losing weight is very simple, but not easy. If it were, there wouldn't be so many people trying to get it right. The #1 skill that you will need to develop in order to make it through is surviving the roller coaster of emotions. One day you'll feel as if you're getting great results. A week later, you may actually feel that you are moving backwards. Either way, just know that as long as you consistently follow the weight loss principles, you will ALWAYS move forward, even if it does not feel like it.

6) Don't stop until your goal is reached, no matter WHAT

So many times people come to a screeching halt in their efforts to lose weight and diet because they get discouraged a portion of the way through OR after they reach a certain benchmark they allow themselves to be satisfied and quit the program even though their goal has not been reached.

DON'T DO IT.

There was a specific reason that you set your initial goal. Do not sell yourself short by settling for anything less. Stick it out until the very end, and your sense of accomplishment will be irreplaceable.

7) Once you've reached your goal, never, EVER let yourself blow up again

This is the last and final barrier to ultimate success in your efforts to lose weight.

Make sure not to allow yourself to relapse while you are in maintenance mode. I recommend sticking to the same general principles that helped you lose the weight and then occasionally indulging in some of the foods that you love. This balance is the best way to keep the body that you've worked for and not feel over-restricted.

Make this the first and last time that you ever have to go through a weight loss program. Remember that if you can just get it right one good time, you can literally maintain it forever with little effort.

To YourBestBody,

Lawrence Cole
Your Lifestyle and Fitness Coach

About the Author: Lawrence Cole is a Lifestyle and Fitness Consultant based out of Los Angeles, CA and the owner of <a title="<a href=" href="http://www.yourbestbodynow.com">http://www.yourbestbodynow.com" target="_blank">http://www.yourbestbodynow.com . Do they mean the same thing? To many people, they do mean the same thing. But the terms may be entirely different in meaning. You must know the difference if you want to lose weight or lose fat effectively and healthily.

When you step onto your bathroom scale every morning, what you will be reading from the scale is weight loss and not fat loss. Bath room scales are never accurate in determining fat loss.

Why? Because it measures your overall weight and not your body fat per se. If you weigh yourself in the morning before breakfast after your bowel movement, you will probably get your lowest reading of the day because your body is dehydrated through hours of non fluid replenishment when you were sleeping and after emptying your bowels, more water and wastes are flushed away so much so that you are you are lighter. After a night of sleep and not eating anything, your carbohydrate store is running low and therefore you are even lighter without the stored carbohydrate known as glycogen. What happened then? You just loss weight not loss fat! Your body fat is still there while the weight of other substances such as glycogen, wastes, water etc are depleted.

Now go weigh yourself again after dinner when you are fully replenished through meals and consumption of water and it may surprised you that you may probably weigh 2kg or more heavier and that is at least 4.4 pounds! You just gained weight and may even gained fat! Now you can see that it is such a misnomer when people think weight loss and fat loss are the same thing.

Why must you know the difference? Because for most of us, especially those who are on the fat side want to lose fat and not necessarily want to lose weight. Getting the drift?

Now for the more important part. Mere weight loss may cause you to lose muscle and in turn, make you gain body fat later. Yes, it is ironical. That is because the more muscle mass you have, the more you burn fat efficiently because muscle is an active tissue and it requires calories to function. Body fat just sit there doing nothing and thus do not burn calories on its own. So the less muscle mass you have, the less calories your body will burn. The fewer calories your body burn, the more calories ended up being stored as body fat! Therefore it is important to lose fat but not merely lose weight which may include the loss of muscle tissues.

How is it that a person may lose muscle on a weight loss program? Well for starters, we commonly hear about people going on this diet and that diet. Most diets demand a severe restriction of food or calorie intake. Your body will then signal to your mind that you are in a starvation mode and the body is designed to store fat for the impending famine and will use up your muscle for energy in your daily activities.

Some diets advocate a severe cut in carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is your body's first source of energy. When your body is depleted of carbohydrate, it turns to your protein (muscles) and body fat indiscriminately for energy. Now to make matters worse, because of the restricted carbohydrate consumed, there will be fewer carbohydrate calories to be used as energy calories and that again will signal the onset of starvation mode again. The vicious cycle of your body cannibalizing its own muscle is set in motion again. The same applies to people on slimming pills or salon fat loss programs.

So some people say ok, Chris, I see your point, so I will just do plenty of cardio exercises to lose weight. Another grave mistake. Have you ever wondered why marathon runners, those who run many kilometers often and are doing cardio exercises almost everyday are so skinny with no muscle tone? Because your body is a wonderful machine. It is designed to adapt. When you run or skip or swim long enough, it will say, look, I better get lighter so that I can take the stress better and improve the endurance. Guess what? Your muscles are heavier than fats and what will your body shed more when it wants to get lighter? Muscle or fat? Your body will shed both but more muscles than fats.

Anyway, why would you want to lose weight only to become a smaller you with the same body shape without any muscle tone? Why would you want to be on a weight loss program that eats your muscles and lower your fat burning rate so much so that when you are off the program, the fats come piling back on again?

Therefore, while you are on a lose weight program, you must also be on a build muscle program. That will mean a combination of correct dietary habit, cardio exercises and weightlifting exercises to maintain muscle preservation and a fat loss result.

From now on tell people you are on a fat loss program and not a weight loss program. That you are on a correct eating habit instead of just simply dieting.

With the distinction clearly in mind, you will then know how to lose fat effectively, preserve and grow your muscles and at the same time losing weight on your bathroom scale. That would be an ideal way to achieve your weight loss objective because you will lose body fat instead of muscle and mere body wastes.

About the Author: Chris Chew is a fitness personal trainer of fashion models, male pageant winners and actors. Before Family? Before Work?

Certainly not!

Of course there will always be things in your life that will be more important to you than this.

However, I do believe that the list of things more important than your own weight loss and fitness is a short one. I also believe that even many things that are more important can be modified to help accommodate this part of your life.

There's also a point to be made that without your health, nothing else matters anyway.

I mean think about it. Obesity is either a root cause or an aid in almost every major deadly disease and condition. I think that calls for your fitness and weight loss program to be just a bit of a top priority.

Wouldn't you agree?

I thought so.

Now if you haven't been prioritizing your program I don't want you to go beating up on yourself. That's not what this is about.

Instead of dwelling on what you may not have done, put in some extra effort this month to find ways to make SURE that you are making the time and resources available to yourself that you need to stay in shape.

1) Schedule Your Exercising, Keeping it Simple and Easy

This sounds oh, so simple. But you wouldn't believe how many people I talk to who "try" to get a workout in "if they can get around to it", and never do.

Look, the reality is that most busy people these days will not be able to get to the gym or even be able to workout at home every day. And the good news is that you don't have to.

Get out your planner and really take a hard look at your schedule. If nothing else, you will need to find 3 to 5 days in a week that you can set aside at least 30 minutes for some cardio. Of course you will get better results with 5 days, but it is more important that you are doing something than doing a lot.

Try to plan activities that are easily accessible and even fun if you can. A cardio funk class at a gym that's near by. Jogging while you walk the dog around the neighborhood. Sticking your favorite cardio DVD into the player and "working it out".

Do whatever is easy, simple, and hopefully fun. You want to set yourself up for success, so don't try and complicate the issue.

2) Plan Your Grocery Shopping for Weight Loss

Create a "master list" of all of the healthy foods that you'll need to get through the week eating healthy. Go and get them all at once and them stock them at home.

This way, you will always have healthy food options that will help you in your weight loss goals.

You also won't be caught off guard with the "munchies" and nothing to snack on in the house but your children's (or significant other's!) junk food. You can also plan to take certain snacks to work with you that can help you stay away from the temptations of doughnut-and-pizza-peddling co-workers.

3) Take Advantage of Weekend Time

The fact of the matter is that for most people, the weekend is the only time when they have complete control over what they do during the day. Why not take advantage of this time to make sure you get in a little jog or some aerobics or even biking in the morning or afternoon when you are having some down time?

Look at it this way: you'll be knocking out 2 days of workouts before the week even begins. Then, based on your personal program, you will only have to worry about doing it again 1,2, or 3 days.

This will go a long way to take some pressure off of you so that you won't feel like you failed just because you got busy for a day or two and truly just could not get around to doing anything for your body.

Using this tactics will go along way in making sure that you are able to stick with your program and not quit---even during times when your schedule is hectic and keeping up is rough.

4) One Day at a Time

Most people won't tell you this, but having the discipline to stay in shape---especially in the eating department---is something that usually is gradual and takes some time.

And I know this from personal experience.

It actually took me a year or two before I could really stick to a diet and exercise plan without fouling it all up. And to be honest, it is still a challenge even for me.

Therefore, there is absolutely no reason why should feel defeated if you mess up on any given day. Just get back on the horse and commit to yourself that you'll get it the right the next; and then the next; and then the next. And when you slip up again. Get over it quickly and do better the next day.

I know this all sounds pretty simplistic. That's because it really is simple.

What makes it so challenging is that ugly four-syllabal word called C-O-N-S-I-S-T-E-N-C-Y. Its what separate people who achieve from those who don't in virtually any endeavor.

But the bottom line of it all is that if the days that you do the right things far out way the days you do the wrong things, you will be truly successful in the end.

And yes, it really is that simple.
